Creating cartoons is an art that does stand on its own. However we can learn a lot from other areas of the art world and bring that knowledge to bare in our own drawing. Take this lecture from Stefan Baumann for example. He gives a wonderful talk about the benefits of keeping a sketch book.
Now if you are anything like me you will already have a sketch book. You may even, like me, have several lying around just waiting for that first wonderful drawing to go in the front to get them started. Follow the advice of Stefan and use them.
Personally I would use my sketch book every now and then to jot down a cartoon idea or rework a cartoon I wasn’t happy with. Even my art journal I would not draw in every day because I want it to look nice. But the question is, how do we get better if we don’t stretch our abilities?
I had been pondering this question when I came across this lecture and it just seemed to resonate with me.
This lecture helped me get past judging my sketch book drawing and start having fun with it again. The home work Stefan sets the class does at first seem really tough to achieve. Twenty five pages with three drawings on each page, within a week! However after watching the video you’ll find Stefan gives you a different perspective on sketching and you’ll relax and have fun.
This Is part one of four. So grab you sketch book and a cup of tea and have some fun.
