After what seems like forever, in fact it was only last September, Lore and I head down to Sidmouth for another holiday. We hire a static caravan near Cullompton for a few days to enjoy the peace and quiet. With plenty of sketching, walks my the coast, coffee and cake. The drive is only about two and a half hours but we like to break the journey up with a stop of in Thornbury. Also chance for a quick sketch, see above.
Our first full day down here and the weather is cool but sunny so we head out to Lyme Regis. If you ever get to go to Lyme always park on the top car park because the views walking down towards the town are just stunning.
This is a double spread from my art journal for the 20th and 21st. The 20th see’s us enjoying coffee and cakes in Sidmouth. The sun was out again so we had a lovely walk along the coast and through the wonderful gardens. Below is a poem about the gardens from one of my favourite poets Sir John Betjeman.
On the 21st we visit Honiton and after fuelling up, coffee and cake, we explore the museum. It has about 4 rooms spread over two floors and they are all filled with fascinating items and information about the area. First off I was surprised to find out at one time Honiton was the Lace capital in the 1600’s.
The 22nd and it’s Lore’s Birthday. Unfortunately the weather was not smiling down on us so we wrap up against the rain and drive out to the Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth. They are doing a lot of building work over there at present but we still got to see all the donkeys and gave some of them a fuss. We also adopted a cheeky donkey called Ruby. She is one of the biggest donkeys they have and also smart. They have to keep an eye on her because she has learned how to open the gates and let the other donkeys out!
As usual the break was over far to quickly but we will be back again in September. Yeah!!
